The key components of a wire drawing machine include:
Wire feed system: This feeds the wire from a coil through the machine. The feed system needs to provide consistent tension and feed rate.
Drawing dies: The dies are holes of a specified diameter that the wire is pulled through. As the wire is pulled through progressively smaller dies it reduces the thickness. Dies come in various materials like diamond, tungsten carbide, etc.
Lubrication system: Drawing compound or lubricant is required to reduce friction between the wire and die. It prevents overheating and wire breakage. The lubricant is continuously applied as the wire is drawn.
Capstan: This is a type of rotary drum that provides tension and pulling force to draw the wire through the die. The capstan grips the wire on its surface as it rotates.
Coiler: After drawing, the wire is wound onto a spool or coiler at the desired length.
The dies are the key part that provides the wire size reduction. Multiple dies may be arranged in a die block for staged drawing. The machine may have multiple drawing blocks for further reductions. The final wire diameter, surface finish, and material properties are controlled through factors like die geometry, lubrication, and annealing between drawings.
Modern wire drawing machines are fully automated for high production rates. The wire drawing process allows flexibility in producing various diameters and high precision wire for applications like cables, springs, fasteners, etc.
